My daughter is hard to wake up from sleep. A sleeping disorder?

She's 17 and healthy. She gets more than enough sleep. She's still hard to wake up even when she has not done very much activity during the day.

This is my opinion...I think that she probably doesn't have her sleep on track yet. She needs to at least have 8 hours to sleep if she does this then she will most likely to wake up early. =D

If she's getting enough sleep and is still hard to wake up in the morning, she might not be getting very restful sleep. Just because someone sleeps for 8 hours doesn't mean the sleep is adequate - they can still be exhausted when they wake up, because their body and brain didn't get the chance to properly rest and repair during the night.

When she sleeps, is the TV on? The radio? Does she sit up at the computer for hours before she goes to bed? Any of those things can disrupt the brain's natural sleep cycle and make it hard to get a good night's sleep. There is also sleep apnea, a sleep disorder where a person temporarily stops breathing during the night, depriving them of oxygen. People with sleep apnea don't get enough restorative REM sleep, because their body is constantly disrupted during the night before it is able to reach that REM sleep stage.

Most people with sleep apnea are overweight, though some aren't. I would google the symptoms and see if they match your daughter. If they do, it might be time to make an appointment with her doctor. Sleep apnea isn't usually dangerous, but it does wear the body down and make everything a lot more difficult. Treating it (with a CPAP machine) would give her better rest, and better performance overall.

Is she a teenager? Teens tend to need more sleep than adults. Lots of extra growing going on.
