Is it dumb to start smoking?

I just got into a fight with my best friend because she doesn't like my opinion. She recently started smoking Natural American Spirit cigarettes. (She's never smoked before.) She started because she recently saw a picture of Meagan Good (actress) and she had a pack of these cigarettes in her hand. My friend idolizes Meagan Good. (To the point where she's saving up for a nose job and breast implants to look more like her.) You couldn't see the brand name from the normal sized pic, she zoomed in on the ciggs so she could see what brand and exactly what type they were. Now she smokes. I told her it's dumb to start smoking...especially for the reason that she did. She got pissed off and stopped talking to me. Was I wrong? Should I just let her do whatever she wants and keep my opinions to myself?

You were deffinately doing the right thing in voicing your opinion to your friend. Smoking is not good for the body and it's probably the least sexiest thing to do. Smoking is a major turn-off. I think your friend's reason to start smoking is completely stupid. If your friend isn't listening to what you have to say then maybe you should find another friend who will appreciate your opinions. everyone knows that smoking is bad for them, so just leave it alone and let her be the stupid one. I smoke myself, so I can call myself stupid as well...but seriously it's not worth losing your friendship over

I agree with you that yes it is dumb. However it seems like your friend is obsessed and is going to do whatever she wants to make herself more like Meagan Good.

I guess I would just show your concern and then butt out. If it gets worse (I don't see how) tell her you can't stand to watch her do this to herself and back off. Maybe after losing friends she will realize that she is better off being herself.

you are totally entitled to your opinion and i agree with you. i started smoking when i was 12 and i wish every day that i hadnt. getting addicted to anything is never a good idea but hey, you only live once!

Just the other day I had a talk with one of my co-workers, about smoking, it started by me asking him if he smoked. and he said No, and he does not ever want to be around it, I asked Why and he said when he was a boy. His Dad was a smoker and eventually got lung cancer and died. It is 100% proven that if you smoke eventually your lungs will not be able to filter anymore of that smoke and leave you open to get lung cancer like that..


Also I would like to quote a bible verse that is towards the part where you said your friend says keep your oppinions to yourself.

And Never keep your opinions to yourself.

Loving someone is not always about telling them what they want to hear, you must lay your hand down and tell them.

The only dumber reason to start would be the CANCER she's causing herself. But hey, she's a grown up. And a stupid one at that.

You cannot force your opinion on anyone. Yes it is very stupid to start smoking. I have smoked for five years and it was the worse thing i have ever done in my life. Once you start it is really hard to stop. All you can do is tell her how you feel and maybe get online and get some information to show her on how harmful smoking is.

I have been smoking for about three years now, and wish to God that I had never started. I smoke a pack and a half a day. What got me started was peer pressure.
Now in all honesty, it is her body, her lungs, her decision. I do understand that you care about her, but if it's what she wants then by all means, let her do it. She will realize her mistake along the road, as I now do. I cannot stress how much I hate smoking, yet I am right now as I'm typing this. She will eventually see that she made a poor decision, let her see it on her own.

No you're not wrong. You just care about her thats all and if she's dumb enough to start doing something that can kill her just because of some actress then there's nothing you can do to make her stop.

Yes it is very dumb of her to start smoking, its nice that you tried talking sense into her and you have done your part, just leave her alone for now. She will start talking once she realizes her mistake.

No one-and I mean no one should ever smoke. Have her talk to someone who has lung cancer. Just because someone does something does not mean you should. If Meagan Good jumped off a bridge, would your friend? Tell her that you want her around, not sick.

i give my friend advice that she resents all the time. she doesnt listen and she might even get mad at me. but we're still friends. friends dont have to agree, just know when to shut up about it. say it once, argue about it once, end of discussion

Personally, i think that if you are her BEST friend, then you are entitled to at least contribute your concerns for her health. It is a stupid idea to stop smoking simply because your idol does it. Your friend needs to stop acting like a sheep and grow up. Sorry to be harsh but smoking is a big deal, and i am very strongly against it after seeing what it did to my Grandma. Try showing your friend pictures of the effects of smoking. Then she'll see what smoking does to your body.

You can't do anything if she doesn't agree with your opinion. It is only her life, and her health will be destroyed, not yours. You are a good friend that you have tried to give her a piece of advice, good advice. But what can you do? Nothing. In this situation you shouldn't be upset and angry with her.

I wouldnt be just concerned about the smoking, but the imitating as well. Going as far to save up for a nose and breast sugery to look like a star is simply not stable or logical. Her obsession is unhealthy.

She needs real help. Have a chat with her family about your concerns and let them deal with her.

I think you are right...it is dumb to start smoking, especially for the reason she did. But, it is her body and if she wants to be stupid, that is her prerogative. And when she gets lung cancer or emphysema, tell her not to come crying to you.

my best friend got me smoking 13 years ago in high school. stupid right? the ironic part is she is smoke free and i am still a dirty smoker(in thecloset, though)

That is ridiculous of her! Yes, you are right that it is stupid to start smoking. I started when I was 15 and I just quit and the only way I have been able to do it is think of the child growing inside of me. People get hooked nicotine controls your life not you controlling the nicotine....I guess I hope she stops before it is too late.....

Tell her if she is going to feel the need to smoke to do it for herself, no one can justify that....I am trying to commit suicide slowly is the only slightly plausible reason I have ever heard, but not to be someone else, tell her to stop being fake....

Stick to your opinions and recognize stupidity is not the same as being irresponsible. The tobacco industry used to make it a point to spend big money on movies to show celebrities smoking. Showing a pop figure "smoking" and using them as a subliminal commercial is especially dangerous when impressible teens want to emulate their favorite stars. These ae thesame heroes who take drugs, abuse their bodies and exhibit antisocial behavior..so unless your friend wants to follow that non-exemplary path and get hooked on all kinds of negative behavior, I recommend her, and you, seek more positive role models.

I have been a smoker for 8 years now and I am 24 years old
If I could go back in time I would change this! Smoking is the worst habit to quite and the hardest and ,I blame one of my friends for getting me started on smoking!
You are being a great friend for letting her now how dumb it is to get Peer pressured into smoking or Celeb pressured in your friends case
She will soon realise that you care about her best interest and you are concerned for her! Opinions like yours should be spoken!

Everybody should know better, how bad anybody's smoking their life. It is really bad their health condition There is good chance getting a cancer in their lung. I wish, everybody needs think about quitting smoking and I wish to stop make the cigarettes anywhere this world.
