Worried about mothers health from smoking?

My mother has been smoking ever since she was 16 now 45. Only stopping in the time period I was born (15 years ago).

She is in denial and wontface up to the fact that this addiction can kill her and soon. She is overweight and is sick (flu?) at the moment. Whenever I or my dad confronts her about this she gets furious with us and shifts the blame to my dads drinking.

How can I convince her to do something about it. I afraid shes damaging my health as well as she always seems to smoke when I'm around. They say passive smoking is really bad.

What can I do? I need help fast!!

Nothing you do or say will make her quit. She has to want to. If you keep on about it to her, she'll only smoke more. If your dad is a drinker, then she probably won't quit. Her smoking is probably evening out his drinking. It is probably stressing her out, and smoking is the only way for her to deal with it.
Just be supportive of your mother, and try not to badger her much about it. When she's ready, she'll quit.

Ok, tough situation......really tough......

Ok, you might want to try getting another adult to talk to her about it (if theres another one that you can trust)

I also like the first idea, showing her the question.....you might want to print it out a couple of times and leave it places shes sure to see it (eg. her pillow, the shower)

Now although I don't like this idea (ok, im lying, i love this idea, im just not sure, what it will do , it might help, it might hurt) you could take all of her cigarettes and hide them/throw them out.

And yes, your right, passive smoking is incredibly bad, it is said to possibly be even worse than smoking itself.

If you need anymore ideas or anything, you know where to find me :)

I am a smoker too, and I think in order to quit you would have to want to quit. Tell her how you feel and if she wants to quit and is having a hard time, there are these new pills out called chantix. A lot of my friends went on these to quit and with in 12 weeks they were smoke free. Good Luck.

You can try and confice her with horrible pictures of cancers if not u can try and get advice from quitelines i know there's quitlines in australia but thats not gonna help.

so try and confincer with out her getting depress.
so try and shock her then call quilline for smoking.

Print this question out and show it to her...
