Dry Socket and Smoking...?

ok well i got 2 teeth extracted (pulled) 3 days ago then yesterday i smoked twice.. they said not to smoke for 4 days... what are my chances of getting dry socket? and if i get dry socket what do i do, my parents dont know i smoke..?

also how long does it take for dry socket to appear after smoking?

Dry socket can occur from 'suction'. The suction disturbs the packing on your socket, allowing air to enter and irritating the nerve. You need to give your body time to regenerate tissue to protect this area.
You should also avoid using a straw. It can simply occur without smoking or using a straw, so if you get it, it doesn't mean you've been smoking.
You should try to avoid these things as having 'dry socket' is extremely painful. The pain is quite severe and can radiate down your jaw and neck.

Dry socket is the most common complication of an extraction. It develops in about 5% of tooth extractions. It is very painful condition that is easily treated.
This condition is most often found:

In individuals who smoke before their recommended time. Smoking: decreases healing, decrease blood supply to the protective blood clot, brings toxic products to the area, injuries the gum tissue and the negative pressure of sucking removes the blood clot from the surgery site.

If you do not care for your extraction site as instructed by staff.

Not following your home care instruction.

Sucking action from smoking, sneezing, coughing, spitting or sucking, within the first 24 hours.

Prevention of dry socket:

Avoid drinking through a straw

Avoid smoking, it contaminates the extraction site

Avoid excessive mouth rinsing, it interferes with blood clotting

Keeping food from impacting in this area. Chew on the other side of your mouth and gently rinse your mouth with warm salt water after the first 24 hours.

There is no way of knowing now if you are going to get it because you smoked. Try and stick to the rules for 4 days.

You probably won't get one. They aren't that common but some do get them. And they hurt like heck! If you get one, it won't matter by then if you smoked or not. So just call immediately if you have pain and the dentist can get you fixed up. No one will know if it was caused by smoking or not.

it is definitely possible as it is the main cause of dry socket. if you do get it you will need to return to the dentist asap they will flush it will saline and pack it with medicine.you will know if you have dry socket because it's worse than a really bad toothache

Don't smoke, it that simple. If you get a dry socket you are gonna wish you were a non-smoker, and your gonna damn that cig to hell. I hear its worse than having a baby, so think about that.
