Does anyone use the mirena for birthcontrol and smoke? |
I stopped smoking when I got pregnant with my son 4 years ago. Now i'm a stress and nerves smoker only. Current situations have had my nerves on edge for the past 2 weeks! I know that smoking isn't recommended with mirena, but your not with the pill either. I was just curious if anyone else used it and smoked or had any problems as a result or knew anyone who had? I don't personally KNOW anyone who has had any problems and nor do I because I actually smpke and have the copper IUD, so that doesn't increase my risk of anything with the copper IUD. But I might have some information that you could find helpful anyway. The Mirena IUD and the Depo Provera birth control shot contain the sam kind of hormone called progestin, a synthetic form of progesterone. Anyway, since the shot contains no estrogen at all, it is often recommended to women who smoke who still want hormonal birth control only because without the estrogen hormone in it, it is less likely to cause serious side effects. That's not to say that it is completely SAFE for a woman to smoke while using a progestin only birth control, but that it is a bit safer anyway. It means that the risk is still there, it's just smaller. I don't know what the statistics are on women who have had serious complications resulting from the use of a Mirena IUD and smoking. Anyhow, if you are under 35 and smoke less then a pack a day, you risks are smaller still. I know that when I was smoking on the shot though, once I got this pain in my leg and thought it was a blood clot and went to the ER only to find out that nothing was wrong with me but paranoia. Anyway, there are a MILLION reasons I have sworn off hormonal birth control, but the serious risks involved with taking synthetic hormones are on my list. I was not willing to worry about that crap any more than necessary. Good luck, sorry I didn't actually answer your question. |
