Anyone over 35 smoking and taking the pill?

How high are the risks of stroke or heart attack? Does your doctor monitor you more closely? Do they get on you about your smoking?

I'm conisidering talking to my doc about seasonal or some such extended plan. I'd happily have a hysto; but it's not elective surgery and if it was my insurance wouldn't cover it.

Background I've got 5 kids, been pregnant 6-8 times (not really sure) I'm 39, suffer horrid periods (sometimes 9 days long starting every 19). My ultrasound and hormone panels came back clean and healthy. I'm ready to retire my uterus; it's not doing anything these days...LOL

When I was 37 I was on the depo shot, but didn't get it on time. I got pregnant. I had 10 strokes in the period of six months. I've learned to walk and talk again. My memory is still not very good and my cognitive skills could be better, but I consider myself lucky to be alive. I did smoke also. I have 2 factor V Leiden genes. If anyone in your family has had a stroke you can get the blood test to find out if you have these gene. They were first discovered in 1993. Factor V is a blood clotting disorder. You could look it up on the internet and learn about it. If you have either one or two of these genes your chances of having a stroke is way more than someone who does not have a gene. Were I you I would either get my uterus burned, which I did. I can't remember what that procedure is called. Your gynecologist can tell you. Or I would have a hysterectomy and stop suffering through those periods.
I forget what its called - but my friend that is over 35 and smokes (also had brutal periods) was put on the birth control injection (one injection every 3 months). It makes your body stop having your period all together. She loved it. Oh, I remember now - ask about "Depo".
i suggest getting the Mirena IUD it is helpful with heavy periods and if you smoke no pill is right for you!!! The ob/gyn office i work in puts many in and i asstit with this and most women say it wasn't bad. (feels like cramps then done) i also lasts for 5 years and you take it out and put another in.
