Semi-recently stopped smoking and gained a few pounds...?

Obviously exercise, blah blah blah... but i dont think im eating to replace the habit. does chewing gum or small candies or something to resist smoking really help? or does cutting cold turkey just mean ive gotta accept getting fat.

I also stopped smoking semi-recently (5 months ago) and put on a few pounds - it sucks doesn't it? I am your height too, so a few pounds really makes a difference. So hard to loose it again....
I read that your metabolism actually changes to about 10 % less when you stop smoking - or about 150-200 kcal less every day (equvilant to 4 apples or a small coke every day). So if you don't want to put on weight you have to eat less than you are used to. Chewing gum should be fine, but small candy will probably just make you put on weight. If you need something to eat, try whole carrots - they take a while to eat and they are low in calories. Or frozen grapes - they take a long time to eat. Be careful with sunflower seeds, they have a lot of calories.
If you are concerned about your weight it is worth looking into healthy and wholesome food - it can be a new hobby instead of the cigarettes : o ) The worlds healthiest foods are a great place to start www.whfoods.com. Take your time to look around the site - the 100 most healthy foods in the world is described, and there are over a 100 recipes to give you some inspirations.
It is also worth to get a understanding of calories, and how many you can eat a day. I really like this site: www.sparkpeople.com which is about loosing weight and eating healthily. You can keep your own food diary which helps you keep track of how much you are eating, and if you are eating to much.

Don't be tempted by the cigarettes - you may put on a few pounds, but you will regret starting again.

Good luck ; o ) Source(s): http://www.whfoods.com/

i quit too, and i chew a lot of sugarless gum. I do eat more though but i am exercising so i dont blow up like a blimp lol, congrats and good luck!
What wrong with gaining a few pound anyway??
Why are some women so obsessed with their weight
no sweetheart, you are eating more...There is no doubt in my mind...A lot of people will argue over this or maybe even scoff, but the way I quit was slow...I started restricting how many cigs I had each day and the most important thing I did was to completely stop smoking when I drank..And every smoker knows that when your drinking you can easily kill a pack in half a night, so I figured "if I can stop smoking while I am drunk, then the rest should be a breeze..."....and it was....And as for the attempt to "replace" the cig. with something else, try sunflower seeds and bottled water (worked for me, but a woman might not like the idea of sitting around spitting sun flower seeds all day) but try something els...Like, uh, bubble gum or even nicotine gum...good luck
I quit cold turkey and didn't gain a pound, but i did chew sugarless gum a lot, drank lots of black coffee and went out to jog or walk when i felt the urge for nicotine coming.
Getting rid of a habit takes 3 weeks, so you should replace smoking with a new one, this way your mind will keep itself busy.
Something else that works is identifying when exactly you used to smoke (under stress, when together with friends) .Bing aware of this helps you to either avoid the situation or to know in advance how to react to the urge.
