What is the smartest smoking cessation approach available today?

My wife has been unsuccessful quitting for over 12 months.

I quit smoking 4 years ago. Let me ask you a few questions. #1 Is this her idea or yours? It must be hers. #2 Do you constantly bring it up? You need to let it go. #3 Do you love her less because of the smoking? You need to reevaluate your motives. #4 Have you expressed in a loveing way why you want her to stop smoking? Smoking is very personal. People do it for all kinds of reasons. It is not something you can just put down and walk away from it is a drug addiction. If she stops for just one day you should be happy for her. I have not had a cigarette for 4 yrs 3months and 12days and to this very day I still think of it and still want a cigarette. It never leaves your mind. It has gotten better since I first quit. But this has got to be her decision to quit. I tried quitting 6 times before succeeding. You must Be glad for the try. The way I finally quit was to slowly wean myself off them. I smoked Marlboro 100's . I switched to Lights, then each month I kept track of how many and how much of the cig I was smoking. In the beginning I just smoked regularly and wrote down how many in a day and a week and I smoked the whole cig. Then the first week I tried cutting out one cigarette each day. So if I smoked 10 a day I dropped to nine a day. The next week 8 a day if I back slided that was ok I stayed on my target. By the time I was down to 5 a day. I started cutting my smoke short. leaving a 1/2 inch on the butt then an inch then 1/2 the cig. It took me 6 months to finally quit but I did it the way I figured would work best. The main thing is my husband supported me through whatever way I wanted to try. AS long as I kept trying. Your words are very important. Comments like do you have to do that now? Or put that cig out. You don't need that. I thought you were going to quit? All these comments only make you want to smoke even more. Let her alone. She needs this to be her decision. Source(s): Smoked for many yrs.
"By will alone, I set my mind in motion..."
Personal comittment to quit. She has to honestly want to. Obviously, she doesn't want to. Sounds like others want her to but she, herself, has no desire at this time to quit.
Drugs. Dr. prescribed things like Welbrutrin which is an anti-depressant is helping people. I think a support group would help also.
Patches and constant support.

I would go see your doctor... there may be an underlying reason why she smokes over and above her addiction. Trauma, Distress, Depression, Etc...
using visualisation tools. check out www.thesecret.tv
you can trick your mind into believing its done things that uve only imagined. if your wife were to spend a few minutes every day visualising herself as a non smoker, how that would look, how she would feel (healthy, proud, strong) and hearing in her mind people congratulating her etc, then she would find it so much easier.
