What is the best way to quit smoking?

What is the best way to quit smoking?

It sounds strange, but I quit a pack a day habit by switching to a pipe.

Someone gave me a pipe and some tobacco, and after smoking it for a few days I lit up a cig (that had been laying in an open softpack so it was nice and stale) it tasted disgusting, so I put it out and went back to the pipe (though it was not filtered, but at least the tobacco isn't full of chemicals that the cigarette companies put in their tobacco and rolling papers).

Since it was such a pain in the azz to carry, load, light, keep lit, clean, etc., I only smoked it every once in a while, and I went for nearly five years without a single cig. Now I smoke the occasional one (usually bummed off of a friend) but they still taste disgusting to me, so I'm not afraid of getting hooked again.

It's been proven that the tobacco companies have steadily added more nicotine to cigs for the last couple of decades, making sure that people get hooked, and stay hooked. It's a disgusting habit - though it does 'look cool' and nothing seems to go as good with a beer as a cig, but it's a gaurantee that you will have health problems as you get older if you smoke regularly - besides lung cancer, heart disease, you also get nasty lines on your face (and your clothes and hair stink all the time).
Cold turkey. It's hard, so you have to be comitted, but it's the healthiest.
Willpower. Nothing will help if YOU don't want to quit. All you have to do is say I am never smoking again and stick to it no matter how moody or bad you feel. Time will heal all. But if you don't truly want to quit nothing in the world will help.
whatever works for you....its never easy!
the best way to quit smoking is to make sure that you are ready to quit, let everyone know what you want to do so you will have support & try just quitting cold turkey- chewing gum when you feel the urge to smoke helps too. I quit almost 6 years ago when my then 7 year old son came home from school & told me that his teacher knew someone that had died from smoking & at that time I had a lit cigarette in my mouth. I put it out & haven't touched one since. I had been trying to prior to that & was down to where a pack of cigarettes (yes, I said a pack!) would last me a month & a half so it wasn't hard for me, I was kinda weening myself from them. I'm not going to lie & say that it's easy because it's not & you will get the cravings for them but that's where you've gotta be stronger than the addiction & fight the urges.Chew gum, peppermint/drink water/eat veggies- mini carrots are the best & you will gain some weight when you quit but as long as you eat right & take care of yourself, you will be fine. I'd much rather be a little over weight & be healthy than have to worry about dying from lung cancer or heart problems- not only does smoking affect your lungs, it also affects your heart as well.
take care & good luck with quitting
Try the nicorette patch. Yes it does take willpower and prayer to quit. See what works the best for you. I'm sure things will work out for the best.
I quit right before thanksgiving and I used popsicles and chewing gum. I know popsicles sounds crazy. I had the ones that were in the plastic (with out a stick) and when I was at home and wanted to smoke I would get a popsicle and suck on it. When I was out I chewed gum. I quit even with my husband still smoking around me. You have to want to because it is very hard.
