Is is true that women who smoke cannot take hormone pills? |
My girlfriend went to a doctor to try and get help with depression, and mood swings. The doctor said it was a hormonal imbalance, but with her smoking, there is nothing he can give her. if you are talking about hormone pills like birth control, you have a higher chance of blood clots and stroke if you are a smoker. I have never heard of anything about it having to do with cancer or the heart. I was always told that they recommend that you not smoke if you are taking a hormone birth control because of the higher risk of blood clots, especially if you are over 35. You can still take the hormones, they just recommend that you quit smoking. They even say that in the commercials for hormonal pills... It's because her chances for cancer are already increased because she smokes...it would be alot higher if she started hormone pills as well. women who take pills at a risk for developing hypertension, smoking, by itself, already puts a person at a very high risk for developing hypertension and cardiovascular disease... smoking and taking pills almost doubles the risk, drastically increasing the risk of developing hypertension and cardiovascular disease... PS im a doctor It doesnt sat she cant smoke but that it's not recommended. Well, if your girlfriend is over 35, yep. It's true. Doctors won't prescribe hormones to women in their 30s or older, who smoke. If she's under 35 and is a light smoker, she can take hormones. Smoking does increase a persons chances of getting blood clots, but you can still find plenty of doctors who will prescribe hormones to smokers under 35. When I was 20, I would smoke almost a pack a day and my doctor just gave me a long lecture about it and strongly suggested that I quit smoking, but didn't refuse to give me pills just gave a strong warning. I've since quit smoking! Yay! After the age of 35, it is not recommended as mixing smoking with hormones can lead to a stroke and/or a heart attack. If a woman takes hormone pills and smokes, it increases the chance of stroke. |
