Anything taken in by the mother will effect the baby, including drugs, smoking, alcohol and nutrition. Additionally, blood vessels tend to narrow blood vessels, which can decrease the blood flow to the baby. Make sure the mother is taking folate supplements which reduce the risk of neural tube defects. Do not take Vitamin A supplementation, this can increase birth defects.
