Why is my mother-in-law's hip fracture not healing? She smokes, drinks and is very thin.? Sounds like you have answered your own question. If she's not healthy it will take a lot longer to heal. Errr maybe it's because she smokes and drinks! ....Is she resting? Make sure she isn't straining exercises or activities involving or using the hip. Smoking and drinking is not going to help. Especially the smoking part. When you smoke the blood vessels constrict and impede circulation. Therefore she is not recieving adequate blood flow to her hip fracture and will not heal in a timely manner. She may also be depleted of essential vitamins and minerals since she is also very thin. This will also slow down healing time. Encourge your mother in law to at least eat right and quit smoking to heal up. I know it will be tough but she needs it. Been a nurse for years... 1st when you say hip fracture isn't healing, is it the incision or the bone 2nd how was it fixed - pinned, hemi, total. I think you answered your own question. Some people heal quicker than others, plus it's very important for physical therapy after surgery. Did she do all of her physical therapy? As I recall,(i knew a woman that had the same thing done) it's important to stay active by taking walks. I am not a doc, but am pretty sure drinking or smoking has little to do with the healing process. You don't mention how long ago she had the surgery. If she is still having pain, she should be checked out by her doctor. Only they can give a good prognosis. Not someone lay like me. |
