Stress fracture??? |
For the past two week I have been debating on if I have a stress fracture or shin splints. I have gone to the doctor twice. The first time I was diagnosed with shin splints. The second I was given an x-ray even though my doctor did not believe I had a stress fracture(X-ray showed nothing). Now I have come to believe that they are just shin splints because I felt bumps along my shin and the localized pain I was having is nearly gone. I have been on a break for 4 days now and my leg feels a lot better. The pain is along the inside of my leg(tibia). Am I just paranoid? Please help!! Shin splints come from a weakened muscle along side the tibia called the tibialis anterior. Its job is to bring the front of the foot up. The muscle was not strong enough to handle the stress that was given. The muscle pulled along the bone which is lined with a substance called periosteum which is very heavily lined with nerves. Use ice on the area for fifteen minutes out of each hour. Sit on your heels and slowly lift one knee up in the air and hold for a few seconds. Return to the floor and do the opposite leg. Repeat the cycle four more times. To strengthen the muscle you can do an isometric while sitting on your heels. Attempt to pull the front of the foot up a few times. You may also stand with the heels on a large book or a 2x4 board. Place an ankle weight across the foot and lift one foot up as high as it will go ten times and then do the other foot. Repeat this cycle twice more. That should help to stop the problems. i am having a problem with the top of my foot. what is shin splints? |
