What does it mean if you did badly on a nuclear stress test?

The doctor's office called my husband today. They told him he did badly on his nuclear stress test and that he should see a cardiologist right away. They didn't explain why, and they just left him hanging. I think it was cruel of them to not to give us more information.

Does this mean he has blockage or a weak heart? Thank you kindly in advance.

I'm sorry to hear about your situation. If he failed his stress test, it could mean a number of different things. I will assume (you didn't include certain pertinent facts) that they ended the test due to chest pain during exercise. If that is true, a cardiologist will evaluate the results of the stress test and your husband's specific set of symptoms (as well as cardiac enzymes and other findings) in order to determine what diagnostic tests to do next to accurately pinpoint a diagnosis for your husband's condition. There are often many different stages of treatment just to find out what the exact problem is.
A stress test tells doctors different things about how your heart is functioning, which helps them determine the next best step. If he failed the stress test due to chest pain during exercise, that actually doesn't diagnose a particular condition, but it tells them that something is definitely going on that requires further investigation. If the office had told you the actual results of the stress test, it really wouldn't give you any useful information that you would easily understand (unless you understand relevant medical terminology), which is why the cardiologist has to interpret those results and consider your husband's specific symptoms and current findings to determine further treatment, and this is something your doctor's office just couldn't do. I know its hard to wait for an answer, but you definitely want to hear what the cardiologist has to say before you worry unnecessarily about what "might" be wrong. I hope this helped, and I hope everything works out. Good luck!

Many times doctors are not allowed to legally tell you exactly what they see, they instead have to refer you to a specialist, so the doctor might not have been trying to be rude, but has to keep himself quiet due to laws.

As far as not having good test results it could be as mild as early signs of heart disease or as bad as major blockage and needs surgery. I mean it is hard to tell as failed tests can mean anything. I would just suggest that you contact the specialist and make an appointment right away, so that way you can have a solidified answer and you can sleep easier after knowing.

i work in a cardiac icu, usually if a person does badly on a stress test they go to the cardiac cath lab next unless the nuclear stress test was terminated early (maybe he couldnt walk the treadmill, or had a severe reaction to the adenosine/ or dobutamine depending on which test he took) so either he needs to repeat the test or have a cath to check for blockages, good luck.

it could mean he has a partially blocked artery. he will need to explore his options with his doctor
