Given that stress can cause blood sugar to rise, how do you manage yours?

I am under a lot of stress right now. My son is deploying to Iraq in the morning. I have noticed that my sugar has been getting a little bit higher over the last week or so, which I am thinking is being caused by the stress. My doc has given me zanax, but it doesn't seem to be helping much. I am staying as busy as I can, but that also is not helping. What else can I do? Thanks.

I watch my sister as her son went off to Iraq long ago and she sat glued to the TV for months. There is no cure for worrying about your children. Take some time, free your mind, close your eyes, I turn up the A/C to freezing, turn down the lights and deep breath. It lowers your blood pressure. Put on mood music if you have it and enjoy it. . .I have some tapes of rain in the woodlands since this is the desert and I just deep breath. Feel your heart beat and force yourself to relax. If you can make yourself doze off for a few minutes. ..go for it. You will feel like you have had a good nights sleep and ready to go again. Good luck for you and your son. God bless him.

Yoga has a lot of relaxation techniques that help. Also walking a lot helps. http://www.yoga.about.com has all the positions in a usable form.

I would not be taking the zanax as it is another drug that I really don't need.

Understand that you are not alone in this. Yes, lots of us have sons, grandsons, nephews, sunday school children, etc in this same position of eminent danger!

Take several deep breaths and put this boy in the hands of your God and leave him there! Don't take him back to worry about! Let God take care of him!

Much good luck to you!

1st, try to worry as little as possible. Watch more cartoon on TV or video. Hav a balance diet . Do exercise regularly. These are the only things that can help if medicine can't.

how much of the xanax r u on?

You're absolutely right, it can really screw up your BG's. Years ago I had to come to that realization with my job. I was a sales manager and the stress was unbelievable, every day was total chaos. I had gotten so used to it, but my BG's had always been on a rollercoaster and my A1C's were in the 8's. So I became an administrative assistant instead. The pay is about half of what I made, but I'm happy, always learning new things, and my BG's are very stable, and my A1C's are < 6.5.

I also do deep breathing exercises two or three times a day. Breathe deeply into your abdomen, hold it for a moment, then slowly release. I put a reminder on my calendar at work 3x a day so I make time for it. Yoga and/or warm baths might also help clear your mind of negative thoughts. If you have emotionally draining or stressful people in your life, and who doesn't, minimize your contact with them for the next few weeks. Just let them know you're going through a rough time with your son's deployment and you have to take some down time to look out for your diabetes. They'll understand.
