Why are you more prone to illness when emotionally stressed? |
It just doesn't make sense. Why would your body become weak just because you are not happy? It getting sick supposed to cheer you up? I can't believe it's true. Sarah is right. When you are stressed, more energy is diverted from taking care of little bacteria in your system, to accommodating the rise in activity you are facing with stress. This can go on for a long, long time, and sometimes even land you in the hospital with multiple problems because of failures with your body doing it's basic 'house keeping' because it's too busy keeping you from ripping your hair out. When you get sick with a cold or the flu, your body goes haywire cleaning its insides up, and getting things back in working order. Being sick often forces people to stop, breathe, and rest whereas otherwise they'd still be going at a million miles an hour, and gaining more stress. When they -are- forced to stop, they regain energy after the cold has broken, and feel like starting anew. This does not mean it's 'best' to make yourself sick--when you do catch cold, it's a good time to pay attention and reevaluate the stresses in your life, and to figure out how to better balance the energies in and around you. it is because stress weakens your body's defence system. i'm pretty sure that is why. Emotional stress stresses the body as well and weakens the immune system. This has been scientifically proven. |
