How can I get to sleep faster, especially when I'm stressed?

When I was little I only used to have trouble getting to sleep the night before Christmas, or before some really exciting, but I'm having trouble getting to sleep almost every night. I lie down, close my eyes, and get to a point where I'm sort of half alseep, half awake, and I just stay like that.

Is it better to try and count sheep, count backwards, or think of something, or is it better to try and clear your mind completely and just breathe?

I've been really stressed lately cause I just finished a huge exam, and even though I tried to get to bed early (9:00) I tossed and turned till about 1:30.

This has been going on for a while, but I think the exam just made the problem worse. What can I do to go from half asleep to completely alseep?

Masturbate!
Personally I take lots of prescription drugs that dont work either so if you figure it out lit me know
Try NyQuil even if you do not have a cold it help,s me!!
I would suggest a fat joint and a couple beers. Always does the trick for me.
First thing is to figure out how much sleep you actually need. I used to go to bed early and try to get to sleep. I'd sleep a while then wake up and have trouble getting back to sleep. Now I stay up late and only go to bed when I am tired.

Next is get your mind off it completely. What I do is tell myself a story. I started a story line several years ago and when I go to bed I pick up the story where I fell asleep the previous night. By doing that I get my mind completely off the things that keep me awake. It's a lot easier than trying to clear your mind or laying there thinking about the things that bother you.

As a last resort you can try meletonin. It is cheap and non-habit forming. It is the same stuff your brain creates to make you sleep.
Sounds like your mind is just too active and can't fully relax. Try taking about 2 hours before you want to go to sleep one night and just do something that relaxes you personally. Read a book, take a hot bath, think back on fun times... just something to settle your mind and relax your body. You could also try yoga to learn better breath control.
Worse case as a temporary fix you can take 1 benedryl and see if that helps. Be careful using drugs though as frequent use can lead to dependency.
Last, try exerising in the morning or mid afternoon to burn off excess energy and fatigue your body a little. You might find you'll be more calm throughout the day as well as you can learn to "zone out" when working out.
Best of luck to you.
you need to find a way to relax and clear your mind.....have you tried meditation or yoga....exercise can be a good stress reliever....or make a cup of herbal tea, get yourself a good book, put on some soft music, light some candles, fill the tub with warm bubbles....sink in relax ...drink your tea....listen to the music or read...and let your mind drift........when you climb out...dry off and climb into bed.....good luck
