Stress fracture - cast or no cast? |
If someone has a stress fracture in their wrist, should they get a cast? I ask because my husband got one at work, and the care place that took x-rays and such sent him home with a brace. Would getting a cast help to prevent more problems down the road? They don't usually cast stress fractures anymore. The brace will just take pressure off the area and immobilize it so he doesn't use it. But it gives him the freedom to bathe/shower without issue. I'm sure he was told not to take it off except for a few minutes to an hour daily? That is the time needed for hygienic purposes. Hope he feels better soon! The cast is to stabilize and protect a fracture while it has a chance to mend. There is no such instability with a stress fracture, and no need for a cast. No, a stress fracture will heal on it's own and does not require a cast. However! don't let him use that wrist, as a stress fracture can turn into a broken bone fracture very easily! Have a good day. A stress fracture is a common minor fracture and does not require a cast. Most people have no symptoms at all and don't even know when they have a stress fracture. |
