Father had a major stroke?

My dad had a stroke almost three weeks ago. He is 77 and until now, had been totally independent and mentally sharp. The stroke affected the right side of his body--he cannot move his arm or leg, his speech is very slurred and a feeding tube was inserted through his abdomen. After two weeks in the hospital, the doctors discharged him and in less than 24 hours, he started having other complications which put him back in the hospital. He has a Urinary Tract Infection and they will be running stress tests to see if he had a heart attack (he had a mild one several years ago). My dad is not the same. I know that it takes a while for healing, but he doesn't seem to recognize us kids, is very combative, and doesn't seem responsive to his PT and OT therapies. I am afraid that he will never recover. I am slowly saying goodbye to him b/c all I see that is left is a living creature, not my dad. I don't need advice right now...I just need to to talk.

He will never be as you knew him before. Now, your goal should be to provide him with daily family support (have each family member take turns visiting so that one person shows up each day). The stroke affects his mind also and this also may not improve. Your goal now is comfort measures only and your relationship will now be different - as a caretaker, not a daughter. You will have to forge a new path in your relationship with him.

im sorry for ur dad i hope he gets better.

im soooo sorry. my grandmother did this a while back and it does take time...so try not to really freak out. but i do think you should not be unprepaired just in case. but please dont give up hope and just say goodbye...not like your going to leave him....but you have to hold on for him and be strong. give him hope that he will get better and if not give him the ok that its ok to go....once its time. again im sooo sorry but be strong!
