My boyfriend of 3 years suffered a stroke two months ago after surviving cancer. I live in another country and

I rely on his friend to keep me updated as my boyfriend is still in the hospital for rehabilitation. I started sending emails to my boyfriend however when he finally answered he said he doesn't remember me at all and has no recollection of how we know each other. It's frustrating not to be with him during this difficult time. I'm planning to go see him soon. Has anyone been through a similar situation? Any words of advice?

I rely on his friend to keep me updated as my boyfriend is still in the hospital for rehabilitation. I cannot call him because he is still going through speech therapy. I started sending emails to my boyfriend however when he finally answered he said he doesn't remember me at all and has no recollection of how we know each other. His friend has told him about me and he has some pictures of us I don't know if that's helping. It's frustrating not to be with him during this difficult time. I'm planning to go see him soon. Has anyone been through a similar situation? Any words of advice?

Yes, a stroke can cause memory loss and other problems with brain functioning.

If you'd only been seeing him for a relatively short period of time and you weren't seeing each other regularly then it's possible that he has forgotten about the relationship and is feeling disorientated and confused.

Could you send him some photographs or other memory jogs? Can you get to speak to him on the phone?

Other than that there's not much you can do until you get across to see him.

I'm sorry that you find yourself in this position, it must be terrible for you.

I hope you fine some resolution soon.

What country are you in? I assume your boyfriend is in the US but I do not know. Sounds like a sad situation in any event. Best of luck~Spence

???
1. He doesn't know you but remembered how to get into his email...
and

2. this 'friend' didnt bother to tell him that you have called etc or at least explained to him who you were?

3. He had a STROKE and is currently in REHAB but can still type on an itty bitty keyboard???

This doesnt make sense...none of it does

This sounds like a bunch lies (sorry) to explain why he hasn't had any recent time to talk to you.

Have you ever met this guy or is he an 'internet boyfriend'
I know you are thinking that I am wrong and that you love him so you are going to try to put my comment out of your head with a click of a thumbs down and this is your right but before you do that,

I suggest you ask the friend for the name of the hospital so that you can confirm that he is actually there (under the guise of wanting to send some flowers)- I bet there will be some excuse not to give it to you (he just got released that morning, they wont except flowers in the rehab department etc)

When I read this I instantly thought that you 'met' him online and have "talked" to him off and on for 3 years...now he has met someone new and what better way to get rid of you than to say 'sorry, I dont know who you are' just in case he changes his mind, he can suddenly 'remember' you...
My advice would be to check the facts...and 'forget' him too

(he might be married)

I work at a hospital on a neurological unit and work with stroke patients daily. the best way you could help him to possibly remember you is to talk to him, show him pictures or have one of his friends show him pictures of you and read him old notes or emails to and from each other. hopefully one day he will start remembering things in the past, but its not guarantee. i understand how hard it is for what you are going through and i wish you the best luck.

I smell fish somehow !

I agree with the two posters above that dont believe this story.
I think that
1. you have never met this guy only talked to him
2. he met someone else here in the usa
3. He doesnt want to break up with you so the cancer story was to get you to move on- he didn't count on you 'staying' so he had to make it worse than cancer
4. The so called 'friend' is him too
5. This guy probably lied abou himself and said he was someting he was not (rich, handsome, single)
6. He got scared that you would see him and KNOW that he was not the things (see #5 above) that he said he was so if you actually came to the states to meet him you would see that for yourself

7. This guy and his 'friend' are one in the same (liars) and made up this stupid tale to get rid of you in the nicest (albiet cowardly) way that he could
