Some symptoms of a stroke are difficult to identify. But you could ask the patient to smile (this should be even), speak a simple sentence (coherently), raise both arms or poke out their tongue (it should be straight). If you or someone else has problems with these simple tasks then call the emergency services.

The only way to correctly diagnose that is to do a CAT scan of the brain. Your doctor can check your heart and brain to verify that problem.

I believe you are talking about TIA's (trans ischmic attacks). I can not see how this because when you are asleep your blood pressure falls, as this is the main cause of stokes or TIA's.

High blood pressure forces blood through weak vessels which then burst, leaking out into the surrounding tissues, hence a stroke.
