A stroke or cerebrovascular accident in initially a problem of the cardiovascular system. It is the result of damage to one of the arteries supplying oxygen rich blood to the brain. A cerebral thrombosis is an occlusion of one of the arteries in the brain. A cerebral embolis is an occlusion of an arterie by either a blood clot or a foriegn piece of matter in the blood. It could also be caused by a rupture of one of the cerebral arteries causing intra cerebral bleeding.

No, a stroke (also called a CVA - cerebrovascular accident) is what happens in the setting of cerebrovascular disease. It can be cause by a bleed or a clot in the brain.
