How long is the usual amount of time for a stroke patient to stay in the hospital? |
My grandma had a stroke on Tuesday and they are wanting to send her home tommrrow her speech is affected ,bility to walk and other motor skills and I wanted to know what is the usual amount of time a patient should stay. (I also understand that all cases are not the same and time will vary) You answered your own question. The brain is such an extraordinarily complex organ that there is no predictive way to know how long an individual will need to get recovered enough to go home. If they want to send her home tomorrow, they know from diagnostic tests that the acute phase is over and the bleeding is not active, or the blockage has dispersed. She is not still loosing brain cells. She's lucky if she is going home so soon. Even though her speech and gait might still be affected, she can get therapy either at home or as an outpatient to see if those areas are going to improve. Recovery is so individual with strokes, because not only is the brain so complex, each individual bleed or blockage affects a different area, with a different size of dying brain cells. There's no way to predict how long it will go on, how bad it will get before it gets better, or if the residual symptoms ever go away completely or not. Still it sounds like to me it must have been a fairly mild stroke if she is well enough to go home so soon, so be glad for that. All cases are not the same and time will vary. It all depends on her health and her ability to recover. Sometimes it depends on the insurance coverage unfortunately. |
