Neighbors husband is in hospital with stroke. Has been in a medically induced coma.?

Last night in the middle of the night the hospital called her, said he had developed a blood clot in his leg. Did they want her to put him on blood thinner and maybe cause another stroke. (He had not been getting his blood checked, it got too thin and thus the stroke), or they would have to remove his leg.
The Doctor would prefer the blood thinner, and do extremely carefull watching of the brain. Doctors, what would you do in a situation like this?

She went with the doctors decision, to put him on blood thinner and watch the brain, I understand people with one DVT can have a second DVT easier than the average person.

I'm sorry, I'm not a doctor - but felt a need to respond to this.

I'm not sure why the doctors would state that they would remove his leg - are they nuts? First and foremost, the vascular surgeons that take care of the DVT patients, when faced with a potentially dangerous situation such as this is, they would consult with an IR - Interventional Radiologist. Can she speak to these doctors and ask them why they chose not to put a greenfield filter in his groin, so that IF the clot breaks off and embolizes while he's in bed - the greenfield filter will catch it and it won't be able to embolize?

My heart goes out to your friend, she may want to research the use of filters (sometimes greenfield filters, sometimes balloon filters) and the importance of them being installed.

My first DVT took away life as I knew it, it's only been a downward spiral from there and I was only 37 at the time of the first one.

Best of luck.

i am not a doctor, but i will give you some insight. Sometimes the benefits out weigh the risks. How old is he? If he is middle aged or younger, they may want to try and save his leg if there is a chance he can walk again. Also, with the medically induced coma, it may be too risky to do surgery, until they exhaust all other options first.
