Will she ever walk after a massive stroke?

My mom (71 years old) had a massive right side stroke on jan '08. her left side has been impacted. Her leg has some movement. Will she ever be able to walk. She spent 3 weeks at in-patient rehab and now at home. We do all the exercises but she still can not stand up on her own. She was very independent woman and not being able to take care of herself is making her very sad.

Hi, Sorry to hear about your mom. My husband had a massive stroke when he was in his 30's and with time and therapy he was able to walk. A lot has to do with her will and determination. If she does not have any then you might need to give her some of yours. It is important to let the doctor know she is depressed. That is a symptom of the stoke and can be helped with anti-depressants. Walking takes time but can come back. With the stroke affecting her left side, fortunately, her speech is not affected. Encourage her to verbalize her feelings. Also, if she lives with you, you can get into a support group for assistance for dealing with this. Good luck to you.

That happened to my aunt in her 40's her whole left side is paralyzed..She never walked again even w/ therapy.. :-(

Hi i am really sorry to hear about this happening to your mum. I know someone who had a stroke and affected his right side arm, leg etc. I am no docter so please dont take this as guaranteed as probably depends how bad the stroke was. He was really struggling at one point but dd overcome it and is able to walk ok now. Although the stroke did take alot out of him and does struggle here and there but is walking. I hope this is the case with your mother.

She should be able to move around the house with the aid of a wheel chair or support from you, but to walk, the doctor attending to her is the best person to advise you.
Meanwhile, you and the family must take care of her and keep him company as often as you all can. Tell her that she should not be sad and worry about her condition,because it is your duty and privilege to take care of her.

At the age of 29 I had a stroke that effected my left side and could not walk for some time. I spent almost a full month in in-patient rehab with e-stem twice a day just to get the mussels moving again and another 2 months in out patient rehab. I did walk again in time and she may also but it is hard work and I had youth on my side. I still walk with a limp and have some days better than others. Keep her working on the problem and good luck.

She should be getting physiotherapy at your local hospital until she is mobile. You must live in the U.S.

i have seen miracles with strokes. keep up the therapy and keep her moving. learn to do the therapy with here. i have seen two people go nearly back to normal.
