How serious can a Stroke be?

Hi, i just heard that my dad in China had a stroke. Im very concerned and hope you guys can tell me a little about strokes. His currenct condition : When he talks, it is a LITTLE mumbly, his left / right hand is hard to move, and when he walks he feels a bit wabbly. He tells me its not serious, but im still really concerend. Hope you guys can help me out. Im sorta curious of the results of a stroke, and if or not my Dad's Stroke is serious

Thank You!

Alright thank you guys so much, i feel a whole lot better... sorta.

And Becky.... nice answer, very positive... -_- (normally i would laugh at it but this time i cant, lol)

I had a stroke last year and I have completely recovered from it. Your dad's symptoms were almost like mine, so I wouldn't worry about him having a complete recovery. I was back to normal in two weeks and I expect he will also.

there are much worse cases than i see your father has at the moment. some cases, they can not speak.
He is lucky, but he has to watch out. He needs to stay healthy, because strokes can happen more than once.
Sorry for your situation.

Most, though not all, strokes are worst early and improve with rehabilitation and time. It sounds like your dad's telling you like it is. Unfortunately, it also means he's at risk for another stroke, or a heart attack, but I'm sure his doctors are looking at the risk factors and how best to modify them.

It's difficult to tell without much more information. Strokes run the gamut from being relatively benign, to as serious a medical condition as one can ever experience. Even with the symptoms you provide, his particular condition could span a very, very, very wide range in terms of seriousness.

stroke association in united states has good information. the bad thing is, there is no such thing as a stroke that is not serious. it is like saying minor heart attack. recovery rates vary by person and type of stroke, but the best thing you can do is get educated.

It can be SERIOUS because many people have died from them,or others have ceazuiors from having just 1 stroke!!!!!!!

a stroke can be anything from a minor annoyance to deadly, it is caused by a blood clot or plaque plugging a vein too, or in the brain. Since your Dad is talking and able to move around he will probably fully recover. They have real good treatments for strokes now.

Strokes can be minor - even less than your father's - or can be very debilitating, or fatal.

A stroke occurs either when a blood vessel bursts in the brain, or when it gets clogged and starves part of the brain of oxygen. Either way, brain tissue gets damaged. The effect of the stroke depends on what area of the brain gets hurt, and how much of it.

My father has had mild strokes, that caused slurred speech and a little physical disability. He's fine now - speech and mobility recovered just fine. Other people have lasting impairments.

Deadly serious!
