If somebody has a stroke how long before they get back normal and does it make them a retard?

My friend had one now hes in the hospital he got helicoptered out he probly was down for 20 minutes before he got to the hospital he been there for a day he was 25% retarded anyway and hes 50 years old

The damage depends very much on where in the brain it occurred and how much of the brain was damaged or died. Early rehabilitation efforts to counter physical problems are essential. A guy I know who had one was told by his therapist that pretty much any improvement in physical condition happens in the first year. After that, little or none. Intellectually, if certain parts of the brain were damaged recovery will likely be minor but it's possible that he can re-learn a lot. Again, it depends so much on what parts got damaged. The doctors and therapists will have a good idea after a few days and tests.

OK, first of all, retard is not the socailly acceptable term here - you should really say "will he have any mental disabilities" or "will he have any long term loss of mental function"
ANYWAY, if he already had some problems with memory or was a little slow, you may or may not notice much of a difference.
The way a stroke affects everybody is different. It can affect they way their muscles work, but not their brain; it can affect their brain function, but not theri muscles; it can affect both.
Generally if it is caught early and they get help immediately the problems you see at first will fade slowly, especially with the help of therapy. And he is young for a stroke, so it might help, however, he was down for a while, so the changes you see right away may not go away as much as he would like.
I'll give you some quick examples of what you may see:
drooping of one side of the face and it may be hard to control eye or mouth function on that side, he may have a hard time talking at first (with practice this may improve), he could have a limp on one side or have a hard time using his hand, he may have memory loss or a hard time thinking of words he wants to say. It may be very frustrating for him because he can picture what he wants to say in his mind, but it may take some time to get all the words together in order, and it may take him a long time to say something.
Be patient with him and try not to tease him or anything. He will need a good friend and if you hang out and do some of the stuff you used to do with him, it will be a great gift to him. Also, some of the things that change in him may go away after time....
I'm thinking of you and your friend.
Good luck

It depends on a lot of things, like how bad the stroke was, what part of the brain it affected. It's so hard to say how long it will be before he gets back to normal, is he going to a rehab hospital (this is the best way because they will work with the patient every day, and are equipped to help all sorts of rehabs. Rehab at home takes much longer) How determined he is to get back to normal has a lot to do with it too. Some people become very depressed and lose heart and give up. There is always that possiblity that he will never be the same as he was.

One can never know just what damage a stroke can do until the tests are complete and the results are examined. Sometimes a stroke does little or no damage. Sometimes it will cause paralysis (usually on one side) or slurred speech. A stroke can also cause the brain to function differently (but not make you retarded). Any damage from a stroke may be temporary of may last a lifetime.

Good luck to you and your friend,

"make them a retard"? A little politically incorrect, eh? They may never go back to "normal". Stokes can be minor or they can be catastophic. It all depends on the size and location of the blood clot in the brain and how long it was there. In the days and weeks to come the damage will be more clear. You will just have to wait.

He will probably have some other kind of problem...
I really am sorry about that..
His age...and since he was already 25% retarded...it does not look too good..Depends on how bad of a stroke..
I will pray for you and keep him in mind..

Depends on the strength of the stroke. Strokes can disable different parts of the brain which can effect speech, taste, walking, etc.

It might be best to google about it.

Research a lot. That will help you find lots of info that will answer most of your questions.

Good luck,
Zola

Hahahahahah.
Will the real retard please stand up?

Is it the stroke victim or the asker?

BTW, it's MICHAEL, not Micheal.

it all depends on how serious the stroke was and what part of his brain was affected. and i'm sure your friend wouldnt appreciate you calling him a retard, thats totally not nice!

since he is not related to you he will recover just fine
i'm not worried about his brain but i am worried about his friends
