My mom had a stroke at age 35. Are there any special prevenative screenings I should get?

My mother was not overweight or did not smoke. We are still not sure why she had the stroke to begin with. Now she has a permanent speech disability. This was 10 1/2 years ago. Now that I am 23, and a bit more conscious about my health, I am wondering if there are any preventative screenings I should look into. A few people have shared their concerns with me regarding my mom's stroke and the increased chance of me having one. This is considering that strokes can have genetic links. (By the way I'm not overweight or smoke, either.) Also, I get a cholesterol test at every yearly physical and have had a stress test and other cardio tests a little over a year ago (due to heart palpitations--ended up being anxiety) Thanks!

Depending on the type of stroke she had, embolic vs. hemorrhagic, would determine the course of action you should take. In general, be healthy, get physicals, eat lots of fruits, vegetables, lean meats and whole grains. I would also advise you to keep a close eye on your blood pressure as well as high blood pressure can cause hemorrhagic strokes.
Take care.

Sounds like you are doing all the right things in getting checked. There isn't anything else you could do except take an aspirin evry 2nd day. It is ususally genetic. Watch for the signs and be careful.

dont ever smoke and get your carotid arteries checked every few years
