What is a progressive stroke?

My brother has had numdness on his left side for three weeks. He is dizzy most of the time and feels nauseated sometimes. Took him to the ER and they said he might be having a progressive stroke. Sent him home and said that if he gets worst or the numbness persist, to take him back to the ER. What is a progressive stroke?

A progressive stroke is a worsening of neurological deficits, also known as "stroke in evolution". According to E. Kalowskaa, E. Rostrupa, S. Rosenbaumd, P. Petersenc, O.B. Paulsona, Danish Research Center of Magnetic Resonance, Hvidovre Hospital, University of Copenhagen, Neurobiology Research Unit and Department of Neurology, Rigshospitalet, University of Copenhagen, and Department of Neurology, Bispebjerg Hospital, University of Copenhagen, Copenhagen, Denmark, "Neurological deterioration following acute stroke is common and associated with increased morbidity and mortality. The underlying pathophysiological mechanisms are not fully understood, and it is difficult to predict which patients are at risk of deterioration".

Simply put, if your brother's symptoms progress, he should be re-evaluated IMMEDIATELY.

Hope that answers your question. Good luck!
