Does pneumonia in the elderly make them susceptible to stroke?

A stroke is a clot of blood or air that travels to the brain and blocks the blood flow. Blood carries oxygen. So the part of the brain that is not receiving oxygen dies, the part that is starved of oxygen by the clot. Pneumonia is an infection in the lungs that puts people in bed for a prolonged period of time. Being in bed makes blood pool in your legs because you are not up walking around to return the blood to your heart. This pooled blood could at any time travel up to your brain and cause a stroke.

So in answer to your question, YES, a pneumonia could make an elderly person susceptible to a stroke in a roundabout way.

Hmmm.....Good question,I'm not to much up on medical issues but am very much into science,My first impression though would be that any kind of respitory issues would in effect deprive the bloodstream and of course the brain of oxygen, Probably not a good scenerio,Rich
