Which swimming stroke gives the best workout?


I haven't swam for years, but I want to start as part of my training. I'm fairly fit now, but I've never been a very strong swimmer.

Seeing as you're getting back into swimming, why don't you try swimming workouts that include a variety of the 4 main strokes. Vary the intensity and distances for each stroke, see what's hard and what's easy, and improve from there.

Also include some time to work solely on technique. Having the best technique for each stroke will help you improve your fitness faster.

I do not think if there's a name for this. There is a "stroke" that you move your hands, and legs trying to float deep water.

standing straight, both hands doing a circle/pushing down
+ legs kicking like back stroke.
Basically pushing yourself up/stay floating on water.

I find this "stroke" move all your body muscle, and the best exercise in the water.

Freestyle is a good warm up
I personally like breast-stroke after that.

A mix, but mainly front crawl.
