What percent of brain stem stroke victims survive? |
My uncle had a brain stem stroke not long ago. He is doing much better now, but someone told us only 15% of victims actually survive. Is that true?? You're correct that the prognosis is not very encouraging following brain-stem stroke. But the fact that your uncle is doing much better now is certainly a good indication, since many patients do not improve at all. About 20-30% of all brain attack victims die but I don't have the approximate figures for specifically brain stem attacks. The brain stem controls primary functions like consciousness, respiration, blood pressure, hearbeat, speech articulation and more. A 70% - 80% survival rate may be more accurate. Without brain stem activity there is brain death. I will write back after talking to my husband/Dr. but I think it is the opposite, 85.4%. If I am incorrect, I will write again. |
