A stroke resulting in a coma?

Someone in the family had a stroke, he is already VERY ill with other health problems... but he had a stroke and now is in a coma.
what happened? does anyone know the outcome of this? does this look bad?

Yes, stroke can lead into coma due to insult to brain (depending on condition and extent etc).

As you stated 'he is already VERY ill with other health problems'. Thus, it is hard to tell if stroke itself was the main problem that led into coma; and, that's why it is not possible to make predictions or prognosis.

Speak to treating physician/ intensive/critical care staff; they should be able to help you understand what is happening and what to expect next.

A brain stroke, much like a heart attack, is caused by occlusion (closing or clogging) of one or more arteries carrying oxygenated blood to the region.
When one of these vessels gets narrowed and eventually closed off, the area that one vessel is responsible for dies. That is a stroke.

As far as recovery, it all depends on how big of an area was affected and how soon the patient was attended to. The bigger the artery, the more area is affected and harder to recover.

Sorry about your ordeal. Wishes for the best outcome.
