How can I help my brother who's had a stroke and is in a nursing home? |
He's 60 years old, partially paralyzed, but is getting therapy. I had my stroke at the old age of 46. It was difficult the first week in the hospital as I had difficulty talking and my entire left side was weak. When I got home I practised the exercises I was given to do as therapy and also attended rehab. I asked the family not to do things for me unless I asked them to. It was frustrating not to be able to do simple everyday tasks. And while I intellectually knew strokes could cause depression I never applied it to me. Shortly after going home I one day decided I just couldn't stand it any more. Of course I was now suffering major depression but didn't recognize it in myself. Luckily my Dr did and started me on a regimen to control this. What I am saying is treat your brother the same as always. Let him be your guide on how much assistance he needs. And be on watch for the sudden depression - not saying it will happen but it is possible due to hormonal and chemical changes in the brain. Source(s): Personal experience bring him things to make him happy really right now all you can do is be there for him The best thing you can do is be there for him. Learn what you can about stroks, it will make it easier for you and him if you know whats going on. I was resently in the hospital, my family was there for and it was the best thing they could have done. Don't treat him any different. Love him as the brother he was and still is. Just believe in him and support his rehabilitation. Depending on the severity of his condition, he could be back to normal with time. If not, love him as the brother he was and still is. See him as often as possible. Also, if he is mobile enough - take him out - even if it is just to lunch. Also you can ask to be trained to help with his therapy. My dad has been in a nursing home since I was 15 (I am now 31). We try (my siblings) to get him as often as we can. My uncle often picks him up and they have "guys day" too! |
