My grandmother recently had a stroke (about 3 wks ago) and she is about to leave rehab. She still needs a lot of help because she can鈥檛 walk and can鈥檛 move her left arm at all. We鈥檝e been trying to find a nurse to come to her house from an agency, but haven鈥檛 had any success. Are there any other options besides putting her in a nursing home?
If she is leaving rehab, you should be able to meet with a social worker to help with discharge planning. This could cover anything from a short stay in a nursing home to continue to work on physical/occupational therapy, to home health to a personal aide in the home. In Illinois, we also have an organization called Catholic Charities which assists with caregivers in the home up to 4 hours a day if she qualifies. You may also have something similar where you live and your social workers in the hospital/rehab would be able to help you find these answers. Good luck.

I work as a physical therapist in a hospital based system well, that is a tough situation to be in...I sympathize with you...call a nursing agency...yellow pages...If they don't work out, call the hospital to find out what list they have for stroke victims....tell them you are desperate, otherwise i do not know if they will get you one quick enough...But the word "desperate" usually gets them moving...i hope i've helped..God Bless you!!
