Can hemopheliacs get strokes? |
since there blood does not clot how would they? If they're taking medication to facilitate clotting, they can have strokes just like anyone else. I think that having artificial clotting factors floating around would actually increase that risk, but don't quote me on that. Without medication, they couldn't have a stroke caused by a blood clot, but they could still have an artery blocked simply by a buildup of plaque and other junk in the bloodstream. It would take longer and is a lot less likely to happen, but it is technically possible to have a stroke without any clot at all, since a stroke just means an artery was blocked, and it doesn't specify how. The bigger risk, that's similar to a stroke, would be intracranial hemorrhage. A stroke damages the brain because the cells don't get enough oxygen; a hemorrhage damages it because brain cells aren't meant to be soaked in blood like that. Either one can result in tissue death, and therefore many of the same symptoms. The risk of internal bleeding is very significant for hemophiliacs, and that would include bleeding in the brain. Not quite like a stroke, but it's just as bad, and kind of cancels out the reduced risk of an actual stroke. Some strokes are the result of bleeding in the brain tissue which can also cause severe damage and cannot be controlled with the new anti-clotting meds. Physical Therapist |
