What exactly is stroke level blood pressure? |
What exactly is stroke level blood pressure? There is not a set level for stroke level blood pressure. Diastolic (low number) above 110 or systolic (high number) above 150 dramatically increases the risk of stroke. If your doctor said to you that your blood pressure at stroke level then he is telling you your blood pressure is very high and something needs to be done immediately to reduce it to prevent a cerebral accident. A stroke is a failure in the blood vessel... sort of like a bursting bubble on an inner tube of a tire. It can happen at any blood pressure especially if the patient has vascular defects that would put them at a higher risk. The blood pressure is what is measured while calm and relaxed. It is not a constant level and under stress, Sodium load, fluid overload and increase well above what is measured in the office. The lower the blood pressure, the less likely the risk of stroke but it is seldom completely eliminated.... especially in a person who has had one stroke event in their life already. Diabetes puts people at high risk for strokes. Controlling weight and Sodium content in foods will go a long way in helping to maintain better blood pressure. If you are at risk for stroke and uncontrollable blood pressure then avoid foods with known high Sodium levels like ..... dill pickels, saurkraut, cheese, prepared luncheon meats, ham, sausage, bacon, canned soups, canned vegetables, smoked foods like salmon, many microwave fast foods, many salad dressings. Keep your total daily Sodium consumption under 2,000 mg per day and if already suffering from Congestive Heart Failure should restrict it even further... 1,000 mg per day Source(s): Clinical pharmacist because everyone is different there are only guidelines...blood pressure is recorded as a fractional number (120/80) the top number is the systolic reading, this is the pressure on your blood vessels when your heart is contracting and squeezing blood into your vessels; the bottom number is the diastolic reading, the pressure on your blood vessels when your heart is resting. your systolic BP should be below 125 and the diastolic should be below 90 to be considered normal. "stroke level" blood pressure could be reached over a period of time by having untreated elevated pressures. you could also be in danger of a stroke if your pressure is greater than 160 systolic and 110 diastolic. hypertension should never be left untreated, it's not only a stroke risk, it also creates risk of cardiac events, circulatory problems, and kidney problems. you need to follow up with a doctor. It's the sustained BP required to lead to a CVA (stroke) and varies from one person to another. There's no set value. It depends on your baseline BP and the condition of your blood vessels. Hypertension is staged. 120-139 systolic blood pressure (SBP) or 80-89 diastolic blood pressure (DBP) is considered prehypertensive per the American Heart Association. Stage I hypertension is 140-159 SBP or 90-99 DBP. Stage II hypertension is 160+ SBP or 100+ DBP. I'm a nurse. |
