Does it take 6 years to recover from substance abuse thru abstinence?

I've heard that it is medical researched data that in most part it takes someone suffering from chronic substance abuse 6 years of abstinence to make a substantial enough recovery from it for their life to be considered normal?

I was a substance abuser for two years...from age 18 to 19. I quit cold turkey one day. I no longer have any desire to drink. I now get straight A's in school and raised my GPA from a 2.9 to a 3.8.

I had to go to AA meetings for the two underage drinking tickets I received. At those meetings, I was told that if I didn't admit to God what a powerless, insane person I was that I would end up in jail, an institution, or dead.

I thought those people were so pathetic. I would NEVER in a million years want to end up like them....Middle aged and sitting in dingy, moldy church basements whining about how God gave them this horrible disease..

When I am middle aged, I want to be happy and successful, and be spending time with my wonderful family...Not whining about my life.

If you want to recover from substance abuse...just simply don't open the bottle. Say no to the loser friends that try to convince you to throw your life down the drain just like they are doing....
