Tai chi -Hurting people without touching them?

When I was younger I used to go Tai Chi, I progressed to the stage where I was doing push hands but gave it up because I couldn't afford it any more. When i was there we would occasionally see th master fending off people/holding them down/throwing them into mats without touching them? The victim's movements always seemed a bit farcical, but they would fly back onto mats with real force though. I was never given the chance to experience this for myself though. Is this for real though? Was it psychological? Can any tai chi instructors comment?

Hi there

Its complete garbage that has been created over many years.

You see there is some small truth to it but like so many other martial arts without doing any actual fighting over the years its been turned into something it was never intended to be.

Now it is possible to move someone in a fighting sense without touching them but this is purely physiological. If you project yourself, shout, appear more aggressive, make yourself appear bigger then you can sometimes prevent a fight from starting but it does depend very much on you and your attacker.

You can also throw distracting strikes that constrict or break the rhythm of your attacker without touching them but these take great skill and years of training to understand how timing works.

But that's about all you can do. There's no magical or spiritual death touch or force. No chi or Ki only pure intent!

If there really was such a thing the military would have taken possession of it years ago along with the physics and magicians.

Chi and Ki are valid in practice only for meditation and psychological reasons. If you develop your chi so that you can walk on burning coals you will still burn your feet.

But if you develop your chi to create a more positive way of thinking before you fight then you may have a more focused mind. But is that enough to give you the edge?

Best wishes

Purely psychological, or even rehearsed.

It's Psychological. If the people believe enough that it will effect them, it will. There was a great National Geographic Channel show that explained some of the mysticism in martial arts. The second clip is from that show.

Showing it works on believers:

Showing that it doesn't work on skeptics:

It might not be impossible but if someone could do that there'd probably be no limit to what they could do. It'd be like telekenesis. Here's a link to a video showing what happens when someone tries to use that in a fight against someone that isn't brain washed. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gEDaCIDvj... If the link doesn't work, in the youtube search just type Kiai Master vs MMA .

Not sure really. Ive heard of similar things from sound advanced martial artists though.
Not really what your talking about, however I also used to do tai chi a few years a go, and got quite into it as well as doing accupuncture and reiki. Someone attacked me around this time at work, and with practically no deliberate effort-or knowledge how I did it-put the person on the ground in quite a substantial way. I certaintly had a physical contact with the person, but the technique and motion seemed to have a 'life of its own'! Certaintly well beyond any conscious ability.

its all bullshit
there was this clip I watched where the tai chi instructor was throwing HIS students left and right across the dojo without touching them
then shortly after that he was challenged by a much younger fighter
the tai chi instructor got his *** kicked
where was all that mystical **** then?huh?

trust mechanical physics
there is nothing mystical about martial arts
the people who run it like for others to believe that

psychological, self hypnosis type stuff. If you don't beleive it it don't work.

In my bad days being a boxer and wrestler, and this before the UFC's when people thought wrestlers and boxers were not good against martial artists, I used to do the rounds taking on dojo champs, including all the pressure point and chi types, and of course wipe them all out, and mostly have to go very gentle while I did so.

Its all crap. Pressure points work on the average guy maybe. The rest is baloney.

These days I could not be bothered proving people wrong. I they want to spend their money to do the crap... well at least they are staying off the street.

Who is the teacher?

You should have asked him if he can do it on you.

That is the only way you can really know.

Can you give his name?

If you really want the truth, go to him and ask him to do it to you.

I'm not a Tai Chi expert, but there is no way that you can take someone down without any physical force. There have been myths of magic in martial arts for years. Much of this comes from superstitions from Asia and from the movies(Hollywood). Also, in martial arts there are hidden techniques that the averages person doesn't see. Thing appear to be different than what they really are. Often these are taught to the advanced students or advanced rank.

Yeah, I agree with what everyone else is throwing out there. Don't believe the hype. There's no solid evidence that magical chi ko's and telekinesis exist. If people are doing it, then it is likely because the people they are performing it on want to be knocked out/back back magical energy body magic b.s.

No it's all true, if he pushes the air particles between them hard enough they will hit the other guy with force
or maybe it's just crap, who really knows unless it happens to them...nobody!!!
