Simon

I actually recently answered another question mentioning this book!

A favorite book of mine is Cheng-Tzu's Thirteen Treatises on T'ai Chi Ch'uan.

It contains many principles and philosophies which may be difficult to wrap your head around at first - I still go over certain lines several times each time I read it - but it is very good with the amount of detail expressed in each explanation. There is even a set with photographs at the end as performed by Cheng Man-Chi'ang (bear in mind he was partially lame due to polio if memory serves correctly, so his leg positioning may be slightly off).

There is also a great little book my wife bought me for Christmas one year, but I have not seen it elsewhere for sale at all. It's actually among my favorites and deals with a lot of philosophy, however the title escapes me for the moment! I'll get the exact title when I get home and maybe you'll have better luck in finding it. The titles start running together after a while...!

***EDIT***
Okay! That other book title is "T'ai Chi Ch'uan & Meditation", by Da Liu. This one is rather involved and even discusses meridians and pathways for chi to flow within the body. Very good!

Yes, as said previously most of those books refer to some of the Taiji classics and they are at heart the essence of this martial arts, they are the hardest to comprehend but most important.
Other classics include
-Chan San Feng Taiji Classic
-Wang Tsung Yueh Taiji Classic
-The song of the thirteen postures
-The song of Tuishou (pushing hands)
-The song of substance and function

The best books on tai chi is probaly "Yang Secret family Transmissions" compiled and translated by douglas wild. If you want to practice along to tai chi videos such as Master Feng, or learn white eyebrow, without having to wait like 6 weeks for the tape to show up go here:

I would strongly recommend anything by Dr. Yang Jwing-Ming
of YMAA publications.
