Is it true that if teen girls get pregnant they could face health issues in the long run?

I read this in an article on the web but sometimes you can't really believe everything you see on the web because it could be misleading, but I have a cousin who had a baby at 16 she's now 21 and that scares me because she didn't have a very healthy pregnancy. Her baby was born okay, but prematurely and she ended up getting anemia. I am really scared for her in the long run because if this is true then her baby might lose her mom and that's something I wouldn't wish on my worst enemy because moms are precious, so in general is it true that if a girl get's pregnant in her teens then she could be at risk for health problems, and if so how is this?

I wouldn't really consider anemia a serious health risk... It can be easily helped by changing ones diet and/or taking an iron pill. I've been anemic since I was a toddler, and I'm 24 and alive and kickin'. And yes, I was a teen pregnancy.

I would imagine so b/c when you're a teen like 16 or younger your body is still devloping, and if you get pregnant all the nutrients end up going to the baby instead of you.

I've heard from a doc that it can cause problems. That don't nessaceraly mean it ALWAYS happens. Don't worry she's not gonna die or nothing like that. It could just cause endemetriosis or something like that. My mom has it & she was told she got it from having sex at such a young age.

Not that I know of.

Yes you can have health issues if your body goes thru labor and delivery before its done developing, which at 16 would still be. Are they life threatening? not usually, but can be serious enough just the same

The anemia could have been there all along and aggravated 3by the pregnancy. It is true that young mothers are more at a risk for premature babies. if your going to have sex use a condom. Your body is not fully developed and neither is your mind for a child.

even having intercourse as a teenager increases health risks (esp cervical cancer)

more than physical health, the negative effects of teenage motherhood involves the "hidden" issues of mental and emotional health. as a teenager, she is ill-equipped to be a mother. she is a bit more than a child herself.

raising a child is already a gigantic effort. add to that a lack of mental and emotional stability, not to mention financial stability.

as an older cousin (i'm assuming this), you could help by talking to the young mother often. this way, she can air our her grievances in a safe way, to a person she trusts. and if you give her suggestions and advice (ask her first if she wants your help :-) ), she'll develop into a mature individual who will make sure her child grows up well

i dont believe that this is true.
nature begins menstruation at an early age because physically the body has done enough maturing in order for it to give birth. in 3rd world countries, young girls give birth even before they hit their teens. i believe the baby has more risk of becoming ill than the mother does, but most of that is due to poor education re breastfeeding and nutrition etc. and not due to the mother's body being unable to cope with pregnancy and birth.

provided your cousin keeps up her iron intake she should be fine. anemia is not something that only pregnant women suffer from, although it is more common during pregnancy, most women recover from it shortly after giving birth and i cant see it causing many problems for her in the long run.

i dont think you should be too worried, she will be fine.

My sister had a baby at a VERY young age....Every woman and pregnancy is different so it really depends but it is possible. My sister ended up having to get her gallbladder removed and now suffers from IBS, but it could be alot worse. Have her speak to her doc about this. Good luck
