How do you overcome your thyroid disorders?

What kind of doctor do you have to see and what are best ways to treat it?
My wife has hypothyroid.

First of all, thyroid dysfunction is nothing to fool around with. She needs to see a specialist who deals with endocrinology problems, and this will be an Endocrinologist (either through a referral, or on her own). He/she can perform a panel of thyroid function tests that will determine the extent of the problem. It is important to follow the directions explicitly, because this is a sensitive endocrine problem, and the medication can and will bring the thyroid into proper function. Your nearby hospital should be able to help you with names of specialists in your area.
Best wishes for an easily resolved prognosis!
an endocrinologist is the type of doctor. for a low thyroid you can take a tyroid extract that you can get at such places like GNC health food. Along with very regular exercise and no soy products at all, they suppress the thyroid, and as always LOTS of water, an improvement should be seen. for a hyperthyroid, soy, soy, soy. it slows it down and regulates it. and again LOTS of water. this is what i have found. the meds from the doctor are horrible. the side affects are terrible and one of the types they give out on a right regular basis is so bad that if you werent buying it as medication it would be considered poision. yuck! they damage your liver. any time you can get out of meds do it.
i am also hypothyroid, and i know it can be very frustrating to try to get the right treatment. i am treated by my general family doctor, but sometimes your family doc will recommend an endocrinologist -- a hormone doctor. a great book that really helped me to understand my condition is "living well with hypothyroidism," by mary shomon. i'll put a link in the "source" field for you.

something to keep in mind: there are a few different types of meds available for treating hypothyroidism. without getting too technical, there's one type that provides a hormone her body needs, but then needs to be processed further by her body to provide all of the hormones she needs. this type is "T4," or brand name "Synthroid." there's another type that provides all of the hormones found in a healthy thyroid, so that her body won't have to work to break down the "T4" for itself. the major brand name for this type is "Armour Thyroid." most docs will first try Synthroid, but if that's not helping her, she may want to ask about Armour.

hope this helps!!
