5 year old with a thyroid disorder? |
I took my 5 year old to the doctor 2 weeks ago because she had a fever that kept popping up and was extremely tired, the doctor tested her for strep, flu, UTI, and mono..turns out it was a UTI. I took her in yesterday and the doc said she wanted to test her thyroid that it could be part of the reason shes always so tired. They said the test wont be back for a week. What would it mean if she did have an underactive thyroid, I know that it does run in my family but I dont know anything about it. Id appreciate any advice. Thanks it regulates a lot of hormones in the body and regulates the metabolism and would cause her to be tired. it may mean she would need medication if it is too underactive. i hope this helps a little bit, webmd.com might be helpful too. Source(s): my mother had an over active thyroid and now has had it removed Basically it boils down to being monitered and on medication for the rest of your childs life. But the child will be grateful if this is the cause because it is easily treatable and she will feel so much better after starting the synthyroid. If you daughter has an underactive thyroid (hypothyroidism), it will mean a lifetime of thyroid medication. The medication is actual the thyroid hormones she is lacking. These hormones control metabolism. She will need to see the doctor regularly as her dose will change frequently until adulthood. Fatigue is a symptom of both an underactive and an overactive thyroid. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/hypothyroid... |
