Does urinating after a bath (for a female) prevent urinary tract infections caused by bathing?

My daughter loves bathing and has gotten several UTIs in the past. The doctor has told us not to let her bathe, only shower, so that bacteria in the water doesn't get inside the urethra. I told my daughter to go right when she gets out of the tub. Is there any truth to this?

He had previously mentioned no bubbles, so we had stopped that. It happened anyway.

I never heard about not letting little girls bathe, but I was told not to let her have a bubble bath. The soap is irritating. I suppose having her use the bathroom after her bath could help somewhat, just like going after having sex can help pervent cystitis. Your doctor is obviously thinking only of the water, not the soap. My daughter never had any problems with clear water baths. Maybe you could try having her go as soon as she gets out, but if she gets another UTI even with that, I would suggest following the doctor's orders. It's not worth her getting repeated infections just because she likes doing it. Her health is more important than her entertainment.

Well, in theory you might be onto something. The flow of urine does mechanically help flush bacteria out of the urethra.

I don't know of any studies about bathing and girls-- But, my background is in vet med, not human med.
