Antibiotics were first discovered by Alexandra Fleming, when he developed Penicillin.

Over the years, we have been able to produce antibiotics that attack certain organisms only. They have many uses and as the name suggests, they are bacterium inhibitors and will actually kill bacteria within the body.

There are different kinds and some are bacterium specific, which means they will attack certain bacteria only, but others will be left untouched.

For example: Urinary tract infections are often caused by specific bacterium and therefore will respond to one or two antibiotics only. The most common for this type of infection is Amoxycillen or Flucloxicillen.

However, if the Dr is uncertain of the causing bacterium, he will prescribe a Broad Spectrum Antibiotic. This will address several bacterium and hopefully deal with the one you have.
These include Flagyl (Metronidazol)

As for your UTI, cranberry juice is great at inhibiting the growth of bacteria and a few glasses a day will do the job. However, once you have an infection, drink plenty of water to flush the bacteria through and if you can stand it, try some bicarb of soda (one spoonful in a glass of water) to redress the Ph balance.
