Anyone young son ever had a urinary tract infection and the doctor ordered a renal ultrasound?

He is five. I am just curious what they may be looking for and how concerned I should be.

We do many renal ultrasounds (and even VCUs) on young patient for UTI. We are looking for hydronephrosis or kidney masses, which might explain the UTIs. By far, the majority of these scans reveal normal kidneys, so I wouldn't worry just yet!

"A renal ultrasound is done to evaluate the size and shape of both kidneys. It is also used to help determine the cause of pain, recurrent urinary tract infection (UTI), or obstructed urine flow. Renal ultrasound can be done to detect masses in the kidney and determine whether the mass is a solid tumor or a simple fluid-filled sac (cyst)."

"The evaluation of a child with recurrent UTI鈥檚 includes a renal ultrasound looking for dilation of the kidney and a VCUG to find reflux.
The VCUG ( Voiding CystoUrethroGram) is performed by placing a catheter in the bladder and instilling contrast material while X-rays are taken. This is a very safe test performed at most hospitals."

They are just checking his kidney's because it is much less common for a boy to have a UTI than a girl. Don't go looking for trouble. Most likely he will be totally fine. Best of luck!

They would just be checking for kidney infection because of the UTI. UTI'S can sometimes be symptom of kidney problems in young chilren.

Its most likely nothing, your doctor would just be checking to make sure everything ok, particularly if it was a bad infection.
