What positions help prevent Urinary Tract Infections?

I'm an 18 year old female and have had 4 UTIs in the past few months. I had never had one before. I find that I get them after I have sex. My doctor told me to research sexual positions that will decrease the chance of becoming infected. I can't seem to find anything on that on the internet. I also read to pee right after. Does anyone have any suggestions? Thanks :)

Nicole

I have had the same problem as you. Definitely drink as much cranberry juice as you can...whenever I go out to eat, I order cranberry juice to drink instead of pop. Not only does it help prevent UTIs, it's healthier too!

Yes, peeing after sex can help. During sex, bacteria around your vaginal and anal area can easily get on the man's penis or on the condom, and the opening of your urethra is very close to both your vagina and anus. Then when he goes inside you, he can push that bacteria into your urethra. If you pee right after sex, then it helps flush out the bacteria (even better if your pee is more acidic from the cranberry juice) before it has time to cause an infection.

Wiping from front to back after using the bathroom can also help prevent introducing bacteria to your urethra.

As for positions, I cannot provide any scientific answers. I just always get my boyfriend to be extra careful when he's going in - to make sure he doesn't aim too low and then too high, because that could introduce more bacteria onto the condom. Common sense would also tell me that if the position you guys are trying seems to put pressure on your urethra or bladder, don't do it!

Good luck, UTIs suck, I know. Check out this site with myths and truths about UTIs:

Some quotes from various sites:

If a male partner is riding high (in any sexual position) on the woman鈥檚 pelvis, it can cause an awkward alignment that can be irritating to the woman鈥檚 urethral opening, which can swell and slow down her ability to empty her bladder, leaving bacteria to begin multiplying in the urine, or make it more susceptible to bacteria being introduced.

Change sexual positions so that penetration does not rub against the urethra.

Refrain from engaging in male dominant sexual positions as they injure the female's delicate urethral tissue, leading to abnormal urinary bacterial overgrowth. (In other words, female on top is best!)

The best sexual position for avoiding UTIs is with the woman on top; it reduces the stress on the bladder and urethra.

I didn't look for any pictures, but I think the above may help you!

Ouch that sucks!!! Heres some small suggestions that I know.
I am going along with the old stand by, and what everyone suggest obviously to urinate right after sex. I know its not really romantic to jump out of bed right afterwards but it helps. Also keep in mind drinking plenty of fluids during the day just in general. Douching or feminine sprays or cleansers are HORRIBLE!!! in general especially after sex. All they do is mix bacteria around even more. Postion wise, you want to try avoiding postions where he is on top or riding higher than you. Avoiding postions that he is applying a lot of pressure to your pelvis. Basicly because this is causing the urine to stay sationary in the bladder for longer periods causing a possiblity of more bacteria to build up. So try more of girl on top postions, side lying etc...
Also if it gets to the point, you may want to talk to your PCP about prescribing you antibiotics to take prior to sexual encounters. I had a friend who actually had to do this. It sucks but that was the only option for her. Also using plenty of lubrication helps. Even if you are already wet. The friction causes irritation and is more prone for bacteria.
Hope this helped
Good luck!!!

I don't think there would be any positions that would decrease the chance of getting a UTI. I'm not a doctor, so I could be wrong! But I think there isn't because your urinary tract is right near the opening of the vagina. It's going to be touched no matter what. I would definitely pee after sex even though it can hurt.

yes certainly pee after having sex, I have never heard of sexual positions but make sure he keeps it clean.

If both areas are not kept clean it can cause a UTI. Take Cranberrry tablets daily or drink cranberry juice it is said to be great for urinary health.

the big thing is too urinate right after sex. yeah its kinda awkward jumping out of bed to do that, but hey... a lot better then the pain of a UTI.
