Can you temporarily treat a urinary tract infection with amoxicilin?

Can you temporarily treat a urinary tract infection with amoxicilin?

Technically, yes, you could. I don't recommend it, however. Doing that allows the bacteria to become further resistant to the medicine meant to treat it.

Just go to your doctor.

You shouldn't have antibiotics left over from previous infections anyway. You're supposed to finish the full course of medicine even if you start to feel better, for the same reason as stated above. It allows the bacteria to become resistant to the medicine meant to eliminate it, AND the infection could come back.

YOU should not treat any infection temporarily with drugs you have left over from the last time you used them and failed to complete the treatment.

This kind of self-treatment is why killer bugs like MRSA are beginning to proliferate.

If you have a UTI, see a doctor, get a proper prescription, and take it ALL as prescribed.

Yes you can. Ya technically you're not supposed to, but I do it all the time. I get recurrent UTI's (about 2-3 a year) and instead of paying $125 for a doctor visit and $35 for a urinalysis everytime, I'll just take left over antibiotics. It usually does the trick. Sometimes it doesn't (rarely) and that's when I'll see a doctor. Just make sure your prescription isn't expired. And don't listen to these other people....not everyone has insurance and the luxury of seeing their doctor whenever they sneeze wrong!

NO!
You need to get a urine sample tested for culture and sensitivity so that the appropriate drug is prescribed to zap the bugs!

It depends on what bacteria, if any, you have been infected with.
