Urinary tract infection same as infection of the urine?

Is an infection of urine the same as a urinary tract infection?

Yes and no.
A UTI is diagnosed by the presence of bacteria (infection) in the urine. However, it is the urinary tract (or bladder) that is infected by the bacteria that is multiplying there.

No, your urine is not the infected item. Urine carries your body's wastes out from the kidneys where it is processed and taken to the bladder and out to the urethra. There can be an infection anywhere along that route. For example, it it's in the part between the bladder and the urethra - it's a urinary tract infection. Your urine carries away the white blood cells and other items that are biproducts of your body fighting an infection and the waste from the bacteria also.
