Does ultra sound detect cancer of the uterine?

Does ultra sound detect cancer of the uterine?

It can detect abnormalties but is not a conclusive diagnostic tool. Only a bioposy can confirm possible cancer.

If a physician suspects that a woman may have cancer of the uterus, a series of examinations and diagnostic tests is necessary to confirm the diagnosis. Initially, the physician obtains a medical history and performs a general physical examination. A series of blood and urine tests usually is done.

A pelvic exam or internal examination is performed so that the physician can feel the vagina, uterus, ovaries, bladder and rectum. During the exam, the doctor feels for any lumps, enlargements or changes in the organ size and shape. A special instrument called a speculum is inserted into the vagina so that the physician can see the upper part of the vagina and cervix.

A Pap test obtains cells from the upper vagina and cervix. This test is not used to screen for cancer of the uterus; rather it reveals abnormalities that may exist in the cervix. (Cervical cancer is a different type of cancer than cancer of the uterus.)

Uterine cells are not usually collected during a Pap test. Occasionally, however, uterine cells are seen on a Pap test, and such findings increase the likelihood of diagnosing uterine cancer. To diagnose uterine cancer, the physician needs to do an endometrial biopsy to look at the cells lining inside of the uterus or a transvaginal ultrasound test. Transvaginal ultrasound may be done to look for possible uterine cancer. However, it would not be done were cancer found in a biopsy.

An endometrial biopsy is performed to sample the cells from the lining inside of the uterus. Often times, this biopsy can be obtained in the physician's office, using a tiny brush to scrape off a tissue sample.

Another test physicians may use is transvaginal ultrasound. In this test, a probe, which uses sound waves to bounce off pelvic organs, is inserted into the vagina up to the cervix. The ultrasound images that are created can help determine if tumors are present and if the size and shape of the uterus are in any way abnormal. To get an even clearer picture, saline is sometimes put into the uterus with a catheter in a procedure called a saline infusion sonogram or an ultrahysterisonogram.
